Waling-Waling Takes Center Stage At 72nd Midyear Orchid and Garden Show

The Queen of Philippine Orchids is the focal point of the 72nd Midyear Orchid & Garden Show at the Flower Garden/Hardin ng mga Bulaklak in the Quezon City Memorial Circle. The show began on August 31 and will run until September 10. This annual event is organized by the Philippine Orchid Society (POS), also to commemorate its 72nd anniversary.

Also called Sander’s Vanda, the waling-waling is endemic to the Philippines, especially in Davao, Cotabato, and Zamboanga. Its blooming season is from August to September.

Various orchid species and hybrids are on display at this event. Landscape exhibits show the orchids arranged with other flowers and foliage ornamentals, with especially notable landscapes having been awarded on the event’s first day. Visitors to the flower show can drop by the commercial stalls and purchase orchids together with other ornamental plants. Gardening supplies from pots to fertilizers are also for sale throughout the event. The public can attend daily lectures on orchid cultivation as well.

POS has partnered with the Quezon City Government for this year’s show. Event-goers may enter the Flower Garden by entering the Memorial Circle through its East Avenue entrance along the Elliptical Road. Contact the POS secretariat at 0917-848-5468 or (02) 957-3524 for more details.
