6 Must-Know Tips for the Safe Transport of Fresh Flower Bouquets

Transportation of fresh flowers can be tricky for people with no experience in floral maintenance. Without proper guidance you can end up with withered and faded flowers upon arrival. However, by applying a few important key tips and tricks, you can up your game at the transportation of fresh flower bouquets to ensure that your floral arrangements arrive at their destination in pristine condition.

Here are the 6 essential tips on how to transport fresh flower bouquets:

6 Essential Tips for Fresh Flower Transportation

1. Prepare Cool Storage

When you have to preserve freshly cut flowers, put them in a cold place with a temperature between 1 to 24 degrees Celsius (34 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Be sure that your cold storage or fridge doesn’t freeze your flowers.

Remember to remove any fresh produce like fruits or vegetables from your fridge because they release ethylene gas that can harm flowers. If there is enough space, place them in a vase of three-fourths clean water.

2. Retrim Flower Stems

Recut flower stems one or two inches daily to maintain absorption and hydration. Remember to trim stems at a 45-degree angle. If you are going to cut them, let them be submerged in water so that no air gets into the stem.

3. Feed Flowers Regularly

Most bouquets come with a flower food packet mix. This is to ensure that your flowers get the nutrients they need to stay fresh. Each packet contains:

  • Bleach eliminates bacteria and fungi that could damage your bouquet.
  • Citric acid reduces water pH, letting the stem absorb more.
  • Sugar nourishes your cut flowers.

Only apply a bit of the packet every time you change the water for the flowers. If you can’t find a flower food packet try this alternative:

  • 2 to 3 drops of bleach to kill bacteria
  • 1 teaspoon of vinegar to lower water pH
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar for food

4. Water Bucket for Batches

If you have a huge batch of flowers to deliver you can place them in large buckets filled half-way with water. Place them upright on the delivery vehicle and place weights or harnesses to ensure they are not disturbed.

5. Cardboard Boxes for Bouquets

When the delivery is a group of separate bouquets, then it is best to store them in boxes in order to keep the flowers moist. Wrap them around in a cotton wool cloth soaked in room temperature water. Afterward, cover it in plastic to protect it and place newspapers or towels inside the box to prevent it from moving around too much.

6. Plan a Safe Route

Prepare for the journey ahead by checking the weather forecast on the day of delivery. Make sure not to expose the flowers to too much sunlight or heat. So keep them away from windows and unventilated areas of the vehicle. While driving, brake slowly and turn wide so that no sudden changes in direction knock the flowers around their containers.
