How to Take Care of Vase Flower Arrangements

Those who received flowers as gifts or even those who bought vase flower arrangements would definitely want to make their blooms last longer. Who wouldn’t want to appreciate the beauty of fresh flowers for as long as possible? Flowers bring positive effects. Having them in your room can immediately impact your happiness. They are also known for their long-term positive effects on a person’s mood.

So if you want to keep your vase flower arrangements vibrant and fresh for at least a few more days, here are some of the tips that you need to check out.

Tips and Tricks to Keep Vase Flower Arrangements Fresh

Find the Right Spot

Make sure that your vase flower arrangement will be placed in the right spot as this will have a significant impact on its longevity. Choose a shaded and cool area with indirect sunlight. Take note that colder temperature helps preserve blooms.

IMPORTANT: Keep cut flowers or vase flower arrangements away from fruits and vegetables. The ethylene gas that they give off can cause flowers to wilt.

Clip the Stems

The vase flower arrangements from flower shops already have cut stems and will help them last for a few days. Despite that, you should still clip the stems after a few days as this is essential for freshwater to penetrate. Pruning should be done using sharp scissors or shears. Make a cut one inch from the bottom and remember to keep the angle at 45-degrees.

Get Rid of Dead Flowers

Take note of flowers that already show signs of wilting. When flowers start to fade and turn dark, don’t hesitate to remove them. Dead flowers can become the source of molds which can also contaminate other blooms and cause them to wilt. Usually, flowers start to wilt within a span of one week.

Remove Extra Leaves and Foliage

Any leaf that ends up below the water line must be removed. As with dead flowers, the leaves in the water attract bacteria and affect the longevity of our blooms. Extra foliage should also be eliminated as it can increase bacteria in the water and could cause foul water odor.

Remember the Hacks

There are several hacks that can help preserve the freshness of vase flower arrangements longer.

  • Use apple cider vinegar. Mix 2 tablespoons with 2 tablespoons sugar then add it to the vase water.
  • Use soda. The sugar in sodas help makes flowers last longer. Add around ¼ cup soda in a vase filled with cut flowers.
  • Use vodka. Another way to make flowers look good longer is by mixing a few drops of vodka into the vase water together with 1 teaspoon sugar. This will prevent bacterial growth.
