Dos and Don’ts of Keeping Flower Arrangements Fresh

Did you ever want to keep the flowers you receive nice and fresh for as long as possible? Flowers create such a refreshing sight but you have to keep them from wilting. While many exert efforts to preserve them, not everyone succeeds in keeping their freshness. The good news is, there are techniques that you can follow to maintain the beauty of your flower arrangements longer.

Make sure that you’re guided! Here are the dos and don’ts that you need to know to keep your flower arrangements fresh.

Dos and Don’ts to Maintain the Freshness of Flower Arrangements

DOs
  • DO add water daily. If needed change its water too. This will prevent stagnation of water.
  • DO help flowers absorb more water. Cut an inch off the stem at a 45-degree angle. This will help maintain the freshness of flowers.
  • DO keep your flower arrangement free from bacteria. You may use a preservative solution but you may also use bleach to eradicate bacteria or add sugar cubes as a way to nourish the flowers.
  • Do cut the stems. It would be ideal to stagger the heights to add depth and beauty to your flower arrangement. When you cut, make your bouquet around 1.5 times taller than your vase.
  • Do improve your flower arrangement. It would be great if you can explore options on how to improve the appearance and vibrancy of your arrangements.

DON’Ts
  • Don’t let bacteria thrive. Leaves and thorns that fell below the water line must be removed.
  • Don’t keep wilting flowers. A flower that already shows signs of wilting or browning must be discarded. One bad flower can affect the whole bunch so as soon as you spot signs of wilting, remove the affected ones.
  • Don’t expose flowers to direct sunlight. Excessive heat may damage flowers so it would be best to keep them from direct sunlight and move them away from heating vents. Keep in mind that at this point, they will benefit more from a cool environment.
  • Don’t use cold water. Water that is 80° to 110°F is more preferable to start cut flowers as they thrive more in warm water. The high oxygen content in cold water causes air bubbles to form in the stems and blocks water uptake. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Tulips and daffodils are preferred to be placed in cold water.
  • Don’t cut stems above the water. Doing so will make the stem take in too much air and may cause water blockage. It would be best to cut stems underwater.
